Red Monkey Lodge - Zanzibar
After over ten years in the hospitality industry of which the last eight spent in East Africa, i finally decided to open my own place. Red Monkey lodge is a cozy small beach lodge with only 9 rooms, restaurant and bar, located in Jambiani on the wonderful south east coast of Zanzibar.
This area is my favourite as mass tourism has not spoilt the original atmosphere and plenty of activities can be done from here (diving, kite boarding, bike tours, deep sea fishing…check our activity page)
The Red Monkey Lodge is the realisation of a life time dream and intends to be a non pretentious and laid back location for holidays, while offering high level service to spoil our guests. Keywords are: barefoot, informal, cozy, watersports and great food & drinks. We do not offer animation programs nor plasma screens in the rooms and prefer guests that have genuine interest for their environment and the local culture.
Completely restructured in autumn of 2010, this cosy lodge is positioned right on the sandy beach next to a small tropical forest which is home of the red colobus monkeys, that give the name to the lodge. In front of Red Monkey Lodge there is a 2 kilometre long sandbank that reaches from the beach far out into the water, and about 2 km away from shore there is the barrier reef.
The setup consists of 7 one storey bungalows (9 rooms) with traditional makuti (palm tree) roofing , a seaview restaurant, our seaview bar, a reading lounge with book exchange, kite boarding centre and a beachfront chill out area with sun beds with umbrellas.
The pathways between the small tropical garden with – among other plants – aloe vera, lemongrass, papaya, banana, palm trees, are covered with sand, allowing our guests to live a real‚ barefoot experience’.
Redford House - Plettenberg Bay
Redford House is a four star historic country guest house in The Crags near the famous Kurland Hotel and Polo Estate. It is situated against the backdrop of the majestic Tsitsikamma mountains which drop down to the magnificent beaches of Nature’s Valley, Keurbooms and Plettenberg Bay. Not long ago, this forested area used to teem with elephant, buffalo and leopard, and even to-day, leopard, karakul, wild boar, buck, baboons, monkeys, smaller animals and beautiful birds and water fowl still inhabit the area.
Whether you are interested in eco-tourism and natural heritage or the exciting adventure tourist attractions of the Tsitsikamma and Storms River, or whether it is the night life and more sophisticated attractions of Plettenberg Bay you are after, this is an ideal destination for your stay in the Garden Route. Redford House is central to these areas and about 20 minutes away. It is also part of the Cruise The Crags route, which includes attractions like Monkeyland, Elephant Sanctuary, Birds of Eden, Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre, Bramon Wine Estate and Kurland Polo.
Redford House is a 22 hectare estate with lakes, ponds, streams, gardens and nature reserve, and has guided walks along the hiking and birding trails. Redford was an original English settler’s farm and the old farmhouse and barn have been sympathetically restored, forming part of the present guest house complex. Here you will be able to enjoy the tranquility and magic of the estate while being conveniently situated to Plett, beaches, golf and a myriad of other activities.
Our spacious bedrooms and suites have bath and shower en-suite, heating, T.V., hairdryers, and tea and coffee making facilities. Hearty breakfasts are served in the farmhouse kitchen or on the patio, and candlelit dinners in the old settler’s dining room with stories of the old days can be arranged.
There is a pool pavilion and art studio next to the pool and tennis court. Guests can take full advantage of our beautiful weather and laze next to the pool, play tennis, fish or canoe on the lake, or read and picnic under the ancient spreading oaks in the garden. At the end of the day, watch the sun go down in spectacular style in harmony with nature’s evening sounds.
We can organize bookings for restaurants, visits to Cruise The Crags activities, horse riding, golf, visits to nearby game reserves, dolphin and whale watching, lunch at a nearby wine farm and many more.

Rocky Road Backpackers
Rocky Road Backpackers in The Crags is a mere 2kms from the N2 and on a secure rural small-holding set adjacent to indigenous forest and surrounded by open green pastures with wonderful views of the Tsistsikamma Mountain foothills.
Our tranquil, laidback base is the perfect place in which to relax and enjoy nature far from the rush of normal day to day living. The well maintained large gardens have many shaded ‘chill spots’ where one can unwind with a book or the company of others while the plunge pool is a great spot to take off the heat on those hot days
It’s also a great spot from which to explore and experience the many attractions that the Plettenberg Bay region has to offer. We are close to Monkeyland & Birds of Eden, The Elephant Sanctuary, The Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre, unspoilt Natures Valley and the world’s highest bungy. We’re also well positioned for marine boat safari’s, game reserves and a vast network of scenic hiking trails covering forest, mountain and coastline. We are also an accredited BazBus stop and our accommodation is the standard mix of dorms, twins and doubles in the main farm house, bungalows and fully equipped luxury safari tents while those preferring to provide their own tents are free to do so..
Our entertainment areas come alive after working hours with an enclosed veranda/bar area with two fireplaces, the outside fireball for fireside chats and when the plunge pool is swung over to the hot tub on selected nights.
Rocky Road has a well established reputation for its quality farm style breakfasts and evening meals – roasts, casseroles, stews and, of course, the end-of-week braai’s. It goes without saying that the social happenings also add to the memories, which is why many people have returned to continue their experience of Rocky Road.
