It is because of sanctuaries such as Monkeyland and Birds of Eden which go beyond idealism, and who strive to do something positive, that we can look forward to a more optimistic future.

Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve

Situated on the southern section of the Kruger National Park, Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve lies within one of South Africas oldest and best-protected conservancies - the exclusive Sabi Sand Wildtuin.

The natural and unfenced reserve is blessed with a rich bio-diversity of habitat and wildlife, giving visitors an excellent chance of close encounters with the Big Five - rhino, elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard - as well as the hundreds of other African animals and birds indigenous to the area.

Three unique 5-star lodges span over a century of safari history, each one designed to honour a particular African era. Selati Lodge projects the ambience of days gone by,
today’s contemporary warmth and spirit is found at Bush Lodge, while Earth Lodge provides a glimpse of tomorrow with its avant-garde design, environmentally sensitive architecture and innovative character.

Suites at all three lodges have full en-suite bathroom and exquisite decor, epitomising luxury and comfort. Superb cuisine is enjoyed on open terraces or under African skies in open-air bomas.

Sabi Sabi game rangers and Shangaan trackers are acknowledged as the best and most highly trained in the region. Under their guidance, game viewing has earned the reserve worldwide acclaim.

A stay at Sabi Sabi is inclusive of accommodation, all meals, game drives, house wines, nature walks and teas. Sabi Sabi holds the AA Accommodation Award for Best Establishment in South Africa, was named one of 50 international hot spots by Conde Naste Traveler (US) and is the 2003 winner of the ASATA / Diners Club Award for Best Game Lodge. Sabi Sabi was also the winner of a 2002 Imvelo Responsible Tourism Award.

Sabi Sabi operates on the belief that a wildlife sanctuary will only survive economic and social pressures by creating employment, earning foreign currency, paying tax and promoting sustainable tourism.

Sabi Sabi policy ensures the support of local and emerging service providers through out-sourcing and procurement; and that its management actively promotes a workplace culture that is based on respect, participation, and performance excellence.

There are 150 staff at Sabi Sabi, all of whom enjoy the benefit of programmes that include adult literacy, English proficiency, business orientation, and HIV/Aids awareness. Sabi Sabi also supports the local community through initiatives such as the Lillydale Environmental Education Centre and other pioneering natural resource management schemes.

Safari Lodge

Safari Lodge is a five star graded romantic thatched lodge with luxury safari huts inspired by African tribal design. The Safari Lodge is tucked away in a valley of indigenous bush at the northern boundary of the 7000 hectare Amakhala Game Reserve. This romantic thatched lodge is owned and managed by Mike and Justine Weeks.

Each lodge within Amakhala contributes to a collective fund for education and uplifts their staff through training. The collective focuses strongly on HIV/Aids by investing time and financial resources to support an orphanage and by facilitating staff education as well as voluntary counselling and testing. The lodges also support community-based suppliers including a sewing business and candle making business in set up process. “It is overwhelming to be certified by FTTSA; it is a simple, credible way of letting people know that you are operating as a responsible tourism operation”

Mike Weeks, Owner and Manager, Safari Lodge

Safaris 101

African Safaris and Travel, (under the leadership of Louis van Tonder) has been actively involved in the safari industry since the late seventies. The thrill of sharing our beloved Africa is still as fresh and exciting as it was back then... We brought our safari businesses over to the U.S.A. in 1994 to share our dreams and adventures with travelers here and elsewhere abroad. This website, represents many years of designing, researching and operating safaris to the far-out corners of Africa. The fact that we are often in Africa personally, and have constant interaction with the companies we represent, allows us to remain vitally connected to the pulse of Africa - to her political, social and ecological realities.

African Safaris and Travel actively supports the principle of developing of Africa's natural resources sustainably through low-density, high quality Tourism. "Environmentally intelligent" Tourism is nowhere such an important issue as in Africa. All safaris and safari programs have been developed in conjunction with the safari outfitters who are dedicated to conserving Africa's precious and unique resources. All the lodges and camps featured in our programs have been built with absolute minimal impact on the local fauna and flora, and all camps operate under the dictates of approved wildlife management.

Sani Lodge Backpackers

Sani Lodge Backpackers is one of the oldest owner run backpackers in the country that offers good value for money for products they offer while also contributing to sustainable tourism.

Of the various practices reviewed, FTTSA looks for evidence that the business supports community investment as a developmental tool in relation to the business’ unique context. For example, FTTSA investigates efforts made by the business to support the local economy. Sani Lodge Backpackers makes significant efforts towards this, not only through permanent employment of most people from the local area but also by assisting entrepreneurs and communities by allowing them to provide products to their tours for which they are paid. This is exemplified in their Eastern Lesotho village tours, where over 60 families in the Matsaoing district of Eastern Lesotho benefit directly from the tour by payments made to them for services rendered in the fields of accommodation and food, dancing and traditional culture, traditional healer and primary school visits as well as pony trekking.. Since their longer tours started in 2005, over R1 million has flowed directly to grassroots tourism enterprises and service providers around Lesotho and allowed local people to showcase their culture and take a real pride in it!

Sani Lodge Backpackers rehabilitated their badly degraded property by eradicating the invasive bramble and are making inroads on the other alien species such as wattle, pine and eucalyptus. They propagate their own indigenous plants, and have replaced the alien species with thousands of indigenous tree and shrub seedlings in an on-going program. They have also been at the forefront of fighting environmentally unfriendly and unsustainable development projects in their area and are currently deeply involved in trying to prevent the destruction of one of Southern Africa’s most unique treasures, the Sani Pass and the road to Mokhotlong.

“Sani Lodge Backpackers is honoured and excited at being FTTSA-certified, joining the portfolio of other certified establishments allows us to join a group of tourism establishments which we are delighted to be associated with. It is a vindication and reward for our efforts over nearly 20 years.” - Simone and Russel Suchet

Schoone Oordt - Swellendam

Dating back to 1853, Schoone Oordt is a voluptuous, meticulously restored Victorian homestead presiding over 5000m2 of lush grounds in the quaint farming town of Swellendam.  Perfectly positioned between Cape Town and the Garden Route, Swellendam is the ideal stopover or weekend break from the hustle and bustle of the city as well as being a destination unto itself.

Schoone Oordt’s grounds house eight magnificently crafted, luxurious suites, a romantic honeymoon hideaway and a private, spacious family suite set amongst tranquil fountains, fragrant gardens, manicured lawns and an invigorating salt-water pool.  Each room has been fitted with every modern convenience whilst retaining the Victorian feel of the manor house and a bygone era.

Meals are a delight and made with love at Schoone Oordt.  Breakfasts are extensive, delicious and served in the sunlight-filled conservatory in the mornings.  Dinners are served by the renowned Koornlands Restaurant, one of the top eateries in Swellendam, in the evenings.  Originally in their own cottage across the road, they have moved to Schoone Oordt’s gorgeous conservatory and continue to enchant with a fusion of cape country and european cuisine.  Light snacks and delectable afternoon tea and cake are available throughout the day.

The grounds themselves have been especially designed to host weddings, parties or even executive conferences and exclusive team-building weekends.  Choose from the intimate and private conference venue with views of the mountains, the light and airy conservatory with views of the gardens or the cosy, formal dining room in the grand old house.  Schoone Oordt is truly an extraordinary venue with exceptional taste.

The area around Schoone Oordt offers guests an abundance of activities.  Hiking, horse-trails, bike-trails, watersports as well as visits to the nearby Nature Reserves are a must.  A trip to the De Hoop Nature Reserve for whale watching in season can not be missed.  Along with a nine-hole golf course, quaint coffee shops, the renowned Drostdy museum, berry-picking, lavender-picking, good restaurants and a feast of art, Swellendam spoils its visitors for choice.

After all, the emphasis at Schoone Oordt, most importantly, is on luxurious elegance, quality and acute attention to detail without pretence or stuffiness...  She is a grand old dame with genuine soul, heart and a passion for people and the environment.

She looks forward to welcoming you.
